Folk: A Love Story

Two years ago, if you’d asked me if I like folk, I’d have shrugged my shoulders and said “it’s okay”. Now I’m in love. ‘Mumford and Sons’ are great and ‘The Lumineers’ too, but don’t let the smaller bands slip by. Here are a few of the great ones:

The Lone Bellow

They have one album so far and it’s pretty awesome. Zach Williams, the lead singer, wrote many of the lyrics as journal entries when his wife was in the hospital. The doctors told them that she’d never walk again but she struggled through months of rehab and beat the diagnosis. Zach later met his future band members in Brooklyn and they put their first song together in 2010 and are now touring.

Noah Gundersen

Noah Gundersen is an amazing singer and song writer from Seattle. He performs solo and often plays with his sister Abi. He also plays with a full band under the name “Noah Gundersen and the Courage”. His brother usually plays the drums and they pick up various guitar and bass players. His music is incredibly heart felt and powerful.

  1. Great list! While (unfortunately) I feel I’ve outgrown Mumford, I love Noah Gundersen and am now glad I’ve stumbled upon to HoundMouth (thankyou for that one)
You should check out The Head and the Heart, as well as Jamie N Commons. They rock =)

    • Thanks for commenting! I hear you on Mumford. Luckily I don’t listen to the radio so I haven’t had to listen to them get overplayed as much.

Thanks a ton for recommending the new bands, I’ve heard of neither and love finding new stuff. Will listen soon!

    • Driving listening to Jamie N Commons now, love him. I like The Head and the Heart valley video too (live shows always get me) but Commons takes the cake. Thanks again

      • Jamie is just fantastic, agreed, love his voice and style.
The Head and the Heart are amazing live (saw them the other night) check out Gone, and Rivers and Roads.
But yes, Jamie is in a league of his own.
        No problem,
        Thanks for your list also
